# Point of Sale

> Order Point of Sale terminals to enable in-person payment acceptance.

In-person payments let you accept payment from customers at a physical point of sale in a store, at a service counter, or on the move. The customer pays by tapping or inserting a card, or by tapping an NFC-enabled phone or smartwatch using a mobile wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, on a payment-accepting device.

Because the cardholder and their payment instrument are physically present, these are known as card-present transactions — as opposed to the card-not-present transactions of ecommerce. Authentication happens at the device itself, through chip and PIN or contactless (EMV) verification rather than online methods like 3DS. This generally means faster checkout, higher approval rates, and lower fraud liability for the merchant.

Accepting in-person payments requires a certified acceptance device. Depending on your business, this can be a dedicated payment terminal or an ordinary NFC-enabled smartphone. You can get started with any of three setup options: POS, SoftPOS, or the SoftPOS SDK
